"Rain", 1932, starring Joan Crawford

In Somerset Maugham's book about a flapper-era woman who steps off a steamer in Pago Pago and sets about attracting male attention. John Houston plays a preacher who works at converting her to religion and then in a fit of lust rapes her and finally commits suicide. Shocking in the 1930's, the then not successful movie has many visual effects that have since made it an art film classic. This film was  made previously as "Sadie Thompson".
