"Miss Sadie Thompson", 1953, Rita Hayworth stars as an "entertainer" in a story by Somerset Maugham- also made as a movie in 1928 called "Sadie Thompson" and in 1932 as "Rain" (the original stage title). This version stars the very capable Miss Hayworth in an updated 1940's era scenario along with Aldo Ray as the Marine Sergeant who falls for her and Jose Ferrer as the preacher who converts her to religion- only to seduce her and then commit suicide. But in this version, unlike the previously more graphic movie versions, the entire story has a much softer tone, probably to play to a wider 1950's audience. It also has Hayworth doing the now classic "The Heat Is On" musical number, also done in another film by Marilyn Monroe and in various parodies. |
